Myth Conceptions - Black History of Comics
What is DarkStorm, the book/character about, and does it have any relevance in the topic at hand?
“Honestly, the character Darkstorm is no more about race and being a black superhero that Superman is about race and a white superhero,” Grevioux clarifies. “It’s simply about a character who seemingly quits on his planet because he feels that heroes are soft on justice and don’t do enough. That policies and politics are more important than people and justice. He’s kind of like the Charlton Heston character in the original Planet of the Apes whose motivation for going to the stars is that there has to be something better than mankind out there.”
“I like to create characters of various ethnicities though. Thus far, I’ve created Valkyries, the Hammer Kid, the Toy Box, and Guardian Heroes which are not racial and have few or no blacks. And there are more in this vein on the horizon. Still, I feel that it’s necessary to make sure young black kids have heroes that look like them. Fortunately, Marvel provided some positive images for me when I grew up and they kept getting better. So to give back what was given to me, I’ve created a few black superheroes and characters that will be appearing in my books at both Astounding and Darkstorm Studios in the next year or two, Lord willing.”
